Moving our chickenS

If you have been reading the blog, you know that we have been steadily working on the homestead. We have a newly fenced in garden and a chicken run next to it. The new chicken run incorporated some ground of the old chicken run, and another portion was grassy ground. We decided to put our garden next to the chickens because it was the most convenient. We could feed our chickens the weeds and other produce we ended up not using etc and the chickens would either eat it, or it would compost. Fast forward to present day, where our summer garden has finished being productive. And now, we are looking to start our winter garden. Enter novel (not entirely) idea! We should move our chickens from their run to the summer garden right next door to finish off any lingering yield and they can then fertilize the soil and till it for us. The first difficulty with this, was that the gate size would only accommodate the chicken coop to exit the run, but not enter the garden. We would have to take the wheels off and finagle it through our 4 foot garden gate. The second difficulty was chasing down all of the chickens to get them in the garden as well. This took a little over an hour. We did not grab the guinea though. He flew over once all his friends were on the other side. Once everyone was on the other side they were able to feast on okra seeds and cherry tomatoes galore. Now they are happy to use the okra as shade and cover from predators!
