Visiting Hill Top Farm

Ever since we have gotten back from the Homesteaders of America conference we have been mulling over the idea about getting some pigs on our homestead. We wanted a pig breed that wouldn’t completely uproot our land, since we don’t have a ton of it, and we wanted the pigs to be… cute! We have seen how the Kune Kune breed can work together with other pastured animals (such as chickens) and we decided we would give them a go.
We looked up local Kune Kune breeders and we lucked out and found Hill Top Farms in Hillsboro, VA. They are just a stones throw away on the other side of the mountain. We reached out and Trent got back to us quickly. He was more than happy to give us a tour of his beautiful farm and animals. We were able to get some more information about Kune Kune pigs, as well as baby doll sheep and cows. We also discussed what our next steps should be moving forward with the pigs. We decided we would get our feet wet first with a couple of feeder Kune Kunes and if we are still enamored with the idea of keeping pigs, we would investigate breeders in the future. Hopefully, this adventure will be a fun learning experience.
