Planning ahead
Last year we were able to fly by the seat of our pants a little with the chick purchasing and seed buying. This year it seems we need to be more deliberate and on top of everything in order to ensure we get what we want when it comes to seeds and chickens.
As many homesteaders and farmers know, this particular lifestyle lends itself to being a more home based life experience. With travel being more complex due to all the care needed for the animals. Because of this, we are deliberately planning a pause for next winter so we can focus on rest and family before we ramp up with more livestock.
What does this mean? Well… our ladies are getting to be two years old this fall and egg production drops after the second year in layers, so we will be adding to our freezer collection when the time comes. As for Hamlet and Link, the boys will be taken to their final destination in November. All of this will lend itself to full freezers and full bellies this coming winter and expectation for a more thoughtful livestock approach the following spring.
